In blogging, what is a trackback and what is a permalink?

In blogging, what is a trackback and what is a permalink?

technically 2 questions, but I just started with a blog and when I click on trackback, my blog says says trackback link for this entry and lists a link below it that is just text. What does someone do with that text or link? Also, permalink loads the individual entry. Is this just how people can link to it? Why are there these two different links and why do some blogs not have both of them? How are they commonly used?
